Yr Ardd: community well-being through community ownership (case study)

Keywords: Community ownership, green space, food poverty, rural isolation

Yr Ardd is a community gardening project in Llandysul/Pont Tyweli tackling rural isolation, food poverty, and lack of local facilities through shared green space and community ownership. Since 2020, the project has transformed a disused allotment into a thriving hub with accessible paths, raised beds, a Men’s Shed, and regular courses on everything from composting to herbal first aid—all offered free or by donation to ensure inclusivity. Weekly volunteer days, intergenerational events, and partnerships with mental health services and schools have created a lifeline for people experiencing bereavement, isolation, and disengagement, while strengthening Welsh language and culture. Yr Ardd demonstrates how community ownership of green space can address rural isolation and food poverty while building connections, resilience, and hope—creating a place where the community shapes its own future and everyone belongs.
