Railway Gardens is a community-led green space in Splott/Adamsdown, Cardiff, transformed from derelict land into a thriving hub. After losing their community garden to development, residents mobilised through petitions and years of negotiations to secure community ownership of the site, co-designing every aspect of this green space through surveys, events, and consultations. Since opening in 2022, over 16,000 people have participated in climate action and sustainability activities, with volunteers giving over 1,500 hours. Railway Gardens demonstrates how trust, persistence, and genuine co-production can transform contested land into thriving community infrastructure that responds directly to local needs and builds community resilience.
